As part of Lea Valley Project

This project asks you to to articulate and communicate the genius loci of different sites in the Lee/Lea Valley, by creating a beautiful object (or series of beautiful objects), using Kingston University’s workshop facilities. Sustainable Design Solutions Charette 2011, Part II

This was my second time attending the Sustainable Design Charette, like the previous year students from the various Art Design courses in Knight's Park were invited to the Landscape studio, alongside special guest speakers (such as Ecologist Allison Hewitt). The only slight difference this year was that we were joined by Horticulture students from Merrist Woods College. Fortunately, I was grouped with two of the Horticulture students- I found it interesting how

My group's design scenario was to create a "New Mecca for Kingston", the details of the brief was to create a new purpose for the Bentalls Centre by introducing some new activities or events in and around the centre which would hopefully substitute this nation's no.1 pastime...shopping! In response to our brief (not quite understanding the task at hand) we proposed to create stainless steel sculptures of plants inside the shop to remedy the problem of the lack of planting currently in the shopping centre. On carrying out our site analysis we were informed by the shop manager that at one plant maintenance set the back £30,000 per year for maintenance, hence the sparse number of plants. During our analysis we also observed some shop users sitting on the floor to eat/ social due to lack of seating.

For we also proposed to add a temporary foldable foldable platform that would be used for entertainment, as well as, adding bold coloured banners to the entrance making the entrance more enticing for visitors by adding bold coloured banners to the entrance (which could be interchangable with the different seasons).
